Back "Competing With The Best" by Jerry Kennelly
On 30th January, members and supporters of IIBN enjoyed an eveningwith Jerry Kennelly, Founder of Stockbyte at the Royal Society of Arts.
Founded in 1996 and based in Tralee, Co Kerry, Stockbyte is a global stock photography company specialising in the creation and distribution of themed collections of royalty-free digital stock images. Jerry explained that within five years, it had become the third-largest supplier of royalty free photographs in the world, behind global giants such as Getty and Corbis, the stock photo agency owned by Bill Gates. In April 2006, Jerry and his wife sold Stockbyte and Stockdisc to Getty Images, Seattle in a deal worth $135million. Since the sale Jerry explained that he no longer has an active role. Attendees were treated to a short film about Stockbyte which encapsulated the story behind this huge success.
During his presentation, Jerry spoke warmly about Tralee where he grew up and where his parents Padraig and Joan Kennelly ran Kerry's Eye, the newspaper they founded in 1974.
In 1981, when he was 21, Jerry launched his first business, the photo agency Newsfax. The company, which was based in Tralee, specialised in supplying newspapers such as The Irish Times, Irish Independent, Irish Press, the then Cork Examiner and many international publications and agencies such as Associated Press and the Press Association with news photographs.
It was after Newsfax that Jerry founded Stockbyte in 1996. Despite being involved in the day to day management of a multi-million euro global business for almost ten years, Kennelly's passion for taking photographs remains undimmed; he has continued to shoot travel and assignment photography for the Stockbyte library and was responsible for photographing more than 5,000 of the approximately 85,000 images in the current library.
He was one of the founders of Kerrysoft, an organisation which facilitates the development of IT companies in Kerry.
The evening concluded with Q&A, drinks and canapés and was IIBN's biggest event to date with over 170 attendees.
